Lane Rental scheme

Nicholas Soames, Member of Parliament for Mid Sussex, has called on West Sussex County Council to adopt a ‘lane rental’ scheme so that local residents in Burgess Hill, East Grinstead and Haywards Heath get something from the Utility Companies for the great inconvenience caused by road works initiated by them.

Nicholas Soames said; “Everyone in Mid Sussex knows how deeply frustrating it can be when you have to sit in a seemingly permanent traffic jam unable to get to work or drop the children off at school, because the Utilities are digging up the road. This disruption is not only seriously inconvenient but it is expensive as well, as the congestion causes serious impact on the economy of the local towns.

“We simply cannot afford this and I urge the County Council to incentivise Utility Companies by using ‘lane rental’ schemes to carry out their works at times when they will cause much less disruption to local people going about their everyday business.”

Mr Soames continued; “I believe that local businesses and our hard-pressed residents will welcome this initiative.”
