Councillors to challenge housing targets in court Mid Sussex Councillors have threatened to challenge the Government in court over excessive Government demands for 17,000 new houses in Mid Sussex by 2026. The Government recently consulted on proposed changes to the South East Plan, and are proposing to increase the housing target to 17,000 from that previously considered. MSDC has objected to:
Cllr Susanna Kemp says "The scale of the development being imposed on us is a massive concern to the Council and many of its residents. It is unfair and unjustified and we have no idea how the numbers have been arrived at" "The Council's formal response is a strongly worded protest and we hope that the Secretary of State listens to our concerns. If not, we have the option of pursuing a legal challenge and that is something which local authorities don't enter into often or lightly. It does, however, show our determination to fight the present proposals which so threaten our District" A Conservative government will axe regionally imposed housing targets and set communities free to decide their own housing numbers based on local need. |
